Before the internet, rappers used to rap over beats borrowed from US and French artists, Face-b, and even looped instrumental sections left at the end of rap songs. But when the internet came along in 2000, they started downloading beats from all over the world. Soon, they wanted more unique sounds, so a new wave of Moroccan music producers, DJs, and beatmakers stepped up.
Names like DJ Key, DJ Khalid, DJ Van, Tizaf, Maestro on the Beat, and Masta Flow became big because they created fresh beats tailored for Moroccan rap. They worked with early pioneers like Bigg, Muslim, Fnaire, and H-Kayne, producing some of the era’s biggest hits.
More than that, most of these producers don’t just create beats, they also accompany rappers during live performances, with notable examples being DJ Key, Van, and Khalid.
