Hip-hop in Morocco has long been known for its socially conscious and political themes, serving as an outlet for independent expression. However, the arrival of artists like Dros and Shayfeen marked the birth of a new style of rap in the country.
Dros introduced a fresh, street-inspired sound heavily influenced by West Coast music, complemented by high-quality, well-executed music videos. His song “Cazafonia” became a street hit, impressing not only the public but also established rappers like Bigg, Muslim, and Casa Crew.
Meanwhile, Shayfeen, consisting of Shobee and Small X, brought innovative new sounds to Moroccan rap. They were recognized for their talent by becoming finalists at Generation Mawazine 2011, showcasing their unique beats and lyrics inspired by Maybach Music, OVO, and Trap. This marked a significant evolution in the Moroccan rap scene beyond traditional political commentary.
