Double A Brings Rap to Moroccan TV

1997

January 01

2M, Casablanca

Rap was a relatively new and unconventional genre in Moroccan society, and local TV and radio stations were hesitant to embrace it due to its associated clichés. However, in 1997, a breakthrough occurred when Double A (Aminoffice and Ahmed) shattered these preconceptions by bringing the first-ever rap show to 2M, a local television channel.
They performed “Rap Maghribi” from their album “Waki3”, which was released in 1996, during the TV show Réveillon de l’année 1996.
The audience’s reactions are telling. Many were visibly surprised and struggled to keep pace with the unfamiliar rhythm. At that time, Moroccan listeners were accustomed primarily to Arabic music, traditional Moroccan melodies, and Rai. This moment marked a significant cultural shift, as rap began to carve out its own space in the Moroccan music scene.
