Moroccan Rap’s Fight for Free Expression

2011

April 01

Casablanca

Political and social rap has been at the heart of Moroccan hip-hop. While some rappers avoid controversial issues and others hide their messages in metaphors, a brave few speak out directly against those in power. Among them, Mouad Belghouat, known as l7a9d, became a symbol of resistance with his fearless lyrics.
During the Arab Spring in 2011, l7a9d’s music gained widespread attention. His powerful words exposed social injustices, police corruption, and deep-rooted oppression in Morocco. But his boldness came at a cost—he was imprisoned three times, beginning with a two-year sentence in 2011, with each arrest likely linked to his outspoken lyrics.
Today, L7a9d lives in Belgium after obtaining political asylum.
