While trap music was taking the world by storm, Moroccan rap was also experiencing a vibrant evolution in 2017. During this time, Zawa City, the 7liwa collective, and the WDS Shayfeen collective were at the forefront of the Moroccan rap scene. They reached their peak with high-quality releases and consistent output.
These collectives didn’t just dominate the scene; they nurtured new talent and expanded their influence by bringing in emerging rappers, beatmakers, and video editors. Notable figures who rose to prominence included Madd, Xcep, and Yoassel from the WDS collective, as well as El Grande Toto, Ily, Unkonnu, and A6 Gang.
The competition between these camps and other rappers like Rabat DC was fierce, with everyone striving to deliver the best in terms of sound and visuals, each aiming to lead the wave of Moroccan rap.
